How do I sign up for a new Twitter account via SMS?
  1. Send a text message with the word START to Twitter short code 40404.
  2. Twitter will send you a reply and ask you to reply back with your full name to sign up.
  3. Twitter will then send a message back to you and assign you a username based on your full name.
  4. You're all set! Send a text message and it will post as your first Tweet!

How do I start using SMS-created account on the web?
When you join Twitter from your phone, Twitter collects all of your updates on the web. When you're ready to activate your web account, all you have to do is add an email address and a password to complete your profile and log in.
  1. Go to https://twitter.com/#!/login.
  2. Click the link that says Already using Twitter on your phone?
  3. Enter your phone number when prompted.
  4. Twitter will send a verification code to your phone. When you get that text message, enter the code.
  5. You'll then be asked to create an account by entering your email address, a password, and a name for your account. Your username will already be entered, since you created this when you signed up via SMS.
  6. Click on Create My Account, and you're all done!

Yes. When you've attached your phone to your Twitter account, you will only receive updates from friends you've asked to get mobile Tweets from.

Send the keyword ‘ON + Username’ to short code 40404 to turn on updates from friends you want to follow until you choose to turn them off again (by sending the word ‘OFF + Username’). Example, ON barackobama and OFF alissahaku.

Why am I receiving two sets of notifications on my device?

If you have a smartphone that supports an official Twitter app and are receiving two sets of notifications (one through SMS and one through the app's push notifications) you may want to disable your SMS notifications. To do this, send the keyword ‘OFF’ to 40404.

What short commands are available for Twitter SMS service?

When using these commands, do not append an @ symbol along with the command text. If you send these commands with an @ symbol, your commands will be read as a username and will not be executed as expected.

Example: If you want to turn on device notifications, send only "ON" and not "@ON."

Turning mobile Twitter updates OFF and ON:

  • ON: turns ALL your authorized Twitter updates and notifications on.
  • OFF: turns ALL phone notifications off.
  • ON + username: turns on notifications for a specific person on your phone. Example: ON alissa
  • OFF + username: turns off notifications for a specific person on your phone. Example: OFF blaine
  • FOLLOW + username: allows you to start following a specific user, as well as receive SMS notifications. Example: FOLLOW jerry, or F jerry, for short.
  • UNFOLLOW + username: allows you to stop following a specific user.
  • LEAVE, BLOCK, BLK + username: this command allows you to stop receiving SMS notifications for a specific user without having to unfollow them. When you log into twitter.com from the web you will still see this user's updates in your timeline. Example: LEAVE benfu, or L benfu, for short.
  • STOP, QUIT, END, CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, or ARRET: will deactivate your account if you are an SMS-only user. If you've completed the sign-up flow on the web, sending any of these commands to your Twitter short code will simply remove your phone number from your Twitter account.
  • @ + username + message: shows your Tweet as a reply directed at another person, and causes your Tweet to save in their mentions tab. Example: @meangrape I love that song too!
  • D + username + message: sends that person a Direct Message that goes to their device (160 characters).
  • RETWEET + username: sends that user's latest Tweet to your followers (also known as a Retweet). Example: RETWEET Charles or RT Charles
  • SET NAME + name: sets the name field on your Twitter profile. Example: set name Jane Doe
  • WHOIS + username: retrieves the profile information for any public user on Twitter. Example: whois jack or w jack, for short.
  • SUGGEST, SUG, S, or WTF: this command returns a list of Twitter users we think you might find interesting and would like to follow.
  • HELP, INFO or AIDE: texting help, info, or aide to Twitter will bring up helpful tips.
